The REM Sleep–Memory Consolidation Hypothesis - PMC - NIH

It is “procedural” memory, defined as performance on perceptual and perceptuo-motor skills, that is claimed to be impaired by sleep disruption (11–13). However, other researchers suggest that REM sleep has a key role in language or emotional learning (14–16). Evidence relevant to the REM sleep–memory consolidation hypothesis is of three general types.
